WHATS HAPPENING AROUND YOU?
Casket Test- Winner Gets A Lovely Bride!
CASKET TEST:
Yesterday in Belmont, the discussion of the casket test has been spreading around. Week by week people are witnessing a new male experiencing it to receive Portia as their wife. The casket test is a test where men who desire to marry the beautiful Portia take in order to receive her love in return. These men must pick the right casket out of fate in hope to open and find the portrait of Portia. If they pick the casket with the portrait of Portia inside, then that is considered winning the casket test and winning the heart of the beloved Portia. The first person to experience the casket test was the Prince Morocco. He chose the gold casket because it read, " Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire. Why, that's the lady! All the world desires her." (2.7.42-43.) This stuck with him because he believed Portia was what all men had desired. Morocco opened the gold casket he had chosen and proclaimed, " O hell! What have we here? A carrion death within whose empty eye, there is a written scroll." (2.8.70-73) The message sent by from the scroll was, that by choosing the gold casket they paid attention to the outer appearance too much, when you should have looked by the appearance of the inside instead. The second person to take the casket test in order to win the beautiful Portia's heart was the Prince of Arragon. He chose the silver casket because it read, “Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves.” (2.9.38) This stuck with him because he believes what he got was what he strictly deserved. Arragon opened the silver casket he had chosen and proclaimed,” What’s here? The portrait of a blinking idiot presenting me a schedule! I will read it.” (2.9.57-58) The message along with the portrait of the blinking idiot was, "You have focused on wisdom instead of love and you let wisdom choose over your feelings.” (2.9.75) |
WINNER OF THE CASKET TEST: In Belmont during the afternoon the third and final person to take the casket test arrived, this person was a young man by the name of Bassanio. Bassanio was a guy Portia knew and was interested in came to take the casket test as she hoped he would. Unlike the two others Portia liked and helped Bassanio make the right decision but making him get to know her and giving hints. Bassanio later on decided to choose the lead casket because it read,”Thy paleness moves me more than eloquence, and here choose I. Joy be the consequence!” (3.2.109-110). This stuck with him because he thought it did not matter about the appearance of the beautiful Portia, it matter about the love and the feelings. Bassanio opened the lead casket he had chosen and proclaimed,” What’s find I here? Fair Portia’s counterfeit! What demigod Hath come so near creation? Move these eyes?” (3.2.118-120) There also was a script that followed with the fortune and portrait. The script read, “You did not choose by the view, you chose inside appearance therefore go kiss your lady with a loving kiss” (3.2.140-142) The follow along message with the portrait was right Bassanio was the one for Portia whether he knew it or not. He chose her based on her inside appearance therefore he won the casket test and the lady! |
A WEDDING
The newly announced couple Bassanio and Portia have also announced to everyone that they’re going further in their relationship by getting married to one another! The couple first started their new romance affair shortly after Bassanio, her handsome beloved fiancé won over her love in the casket test in Belmont, choosing the lead casket. He portrayed more love and feelings for the beautiful Portia than the others who tried the test but failed because of their ability to judge too shallowly and not deeply enough according to the caskets they chose. He didn't judge her by her appearance, but for what is in the inside, as said in the lead casket. They announced the exciting yet remarkable news soon after he won in front of everyone saying to them, “ Wherever something being blent together turns to a wild of nothing, save of joy expressed and not expressed.” (3.2.185-187) Their wedding that will be held in Padua according to local sources. Close relatives and people nearby are all invited to the wedding and will attend if they are able to come. Everyone who heard the news and who was invited was extremely an overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude for them along with their happiness. The most excited out of everyone besides Portia and Bassanio themselves was Nerissa and Gratiano. They were overjoyed with the news of their beloved friends Bassanio and Portia getting married, because it also meant good things for them.
THE RING
In Belmont after Bassanio successfully chooses the lead, which was also the right casket from the casket test Portia rewards him with a ring. This ring was given to Bassanio as a bond between him and Portia’s relationship, “when you part from, lose or give away, let it presage the ruin of your love, and be my vantage to exclaim on you.” (3.2.176-178). In that Portia is telling Bassanio what will happen if he does not keep the ring with him and on him at all times. Portia gives Bassanio the hoping he accepts it. When he does accept it he also accepts the consequences and responsibility her knows comes with it. Bassanio adds to this agreement by saying, "But when this ring parts from this finger, the parts life from hence, O, then be bold to say Bassanio's dead!" (3.2.187-189). Bassanio is telling Portia that not only with the ring never part from his finer, but if it does it will be the end and the death of him. Bassanio is trying to tell Portia that there is no point in living if he can not be with her. The giving of the ring and the things said was like what happens at a normal wedding. These exchange of words were Portia’s and Bassanio's wedding vows to one another and these ones had a lot of meaning and passion behind them.

Cruel or acceptable?
A heartbreaking story:
Advice column
"I never heard a passion so confused, So strange, outrageous, and so variable as the dog Jew did utter in the streets. 'My daughter, O my ducats, O my daughter! Fled with a Christian! O my Christian ducats! Justice, the law, my ducats, and my daughter, A sealed bag, two sealed bags of ducats, Of double ducats, stol’n from me by my daughter, And jewels-two stones, two rich and precious stones-Stol’n by my daughter! Justice! Find the girl! She hath the stones upon her, and the ducats.” (2.8.12-23)
Very bad move as a father (I wouldn't suggest turning to the dark side when it comes to your kids.) |
Unlike Jessica and Shylock, keeping a relationship with your parent or guardian is a very important thing in life. Although Jessica did steal her father's money and ran off with it, as a father, Shylock should be forgiving and understand that Jessica is his daughter. Parents should be understanding and forgiving if they are doing their job right, and they should always support you no matter how badly you mess up, whether it is towards them or someone else. |
